Delivering Critical Infrastructure Resilience
Following severe flooding at Faughan Raw Water Pumping Station in August 2017, NI Water launched a £5 million flood resilience programme to restore and future-proof this critical raw water facility.
Scotts Electrical Services delivered the complete electrical, power, control and automation package. From the initial emergency recovery works through to installation and final commissioning, Scotts helped restore and modernise the station while maintaining operational continuity throughout construction.
The completed installation provides a resilient, energy-efficient and fully monitored electrical infrastructure capable of supporting NI Water’s long-term operational requirements.
The Challenge
On 22 August 2017, severe rainfall caused the River Faughan to burst its banks, submerging approximately 900 mm of the pumping station and rendering the facility inoperable.
The flooding caused extensive damage to critical infrastructure, including:
- Switchgear and transformers
- Motor Control Centres
- Variable Speed Drives
- Low-voltage distribution
- Instrumentation and communications
- Lighting and building services
An immediate response was required to restore the supply of raw water to Carmoney Water Treatment Works. The permanent works then had to be delivered while keeping the pumping station operational and protecting continuity of supply.
Scotts' Integrated Solution
Scotts initially mobilised specialist engineers to restore critical plant and electrical systems. Emergency generators and temporary Variable Speed Drives were installed, while affected pumps and electrical equipment were inspected, cleaned and recommissioned to minimise disruption.
For the permanent flood resilience scheme, Scotts delivered:
- A new Motor Control Centre and low-voltage switchboards
- Cast-resin transformers and upgraded power distribution
- Electrical containment, power cabling and building services
- Four Variable Speed Drives operating the pumps in a duty/assist/assist/standby configuration
- PLC, control and SCADA integration
- Protection, alarm, interlock and functional testing
- Industrial IoT monitoring for critical plant information
- A dedicated ventilation system for the VSD plant room
- Relocation of electrical equipment above the flood-protection level
All operational, alarm and protection signals were tested and integrated into the site’s SCADA system, providing operators with complete visibility and control of the electrical network.
